Temperature in West Bengal will continue to rise over the next five to six days starting Thursday. The minimum temperature in Kolkata will remain around 14.6°C, which is 1°C higher than Wednesday. Night temperature will remain at around 15-16°C while the maximum will be around 27-28°C. The temperature is likely to increase by 2-3°C in the next 72 hours.
Temperature had already started rising from Wednesday which was the day of Makar Sankranti. Wednesday’s maximum temperature was 28°C which is 3°C higher than normal around this time of the year. The spell of winter this year has been disrupted from time to time by the effect of a couple of western disturbances.
Another such disturbance has formed in Kashmir causing snowfall there. The disturbance has again blocked the entry of chilly northern breeze, thus making the temperature in the state rise.
The disturbance is also likely to bring rainfall to a large part of north India and in the northern districts of Bengal. It may rain on Thursday in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Rainfall may continue in the northern districts of Bengal for the next three days. Almost all the districts in north Bengal especially Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar are likely to receive rainfall on Friday and Saturday. Rain may continue till Sunday in these areas.
However, chances of rainfall are almost nil in parts of south Bengal for the next three days. Sunny days are predicted. Medium to dense fog formation is likely in some districts.
It is still not clear whether the chilly spell of winter will return after the disturbances die down because another western disturbance is predicted to enter Kashmir around January 22.
