Winter: Chill sets in from today in Bengal

Winter is all set to arrive in West Bengal towards the weekend, though the air is already chilly in south Bengal. The air has been chilly right from Monday evening and Tuesday morning too had a wintry feeling in Kolkata and the rest of south Bengal. In north Bengal, winter has pleasantly set in, and there was snowfall in Sandakphu last week.

The western disturbances which were blocking the entry of the cold air from the north and north-west have disappeared. This is likely to cause a steady drop in temperature from today which may continue over the weekend. The weather office generally declares the onset of winter after the temperature remains at around 15°C for at least five days or so.

With the western disturbances subsiding, the weather office thinks it’s finally time for such conditions to develop in this part of the country. The temperature is likely to drop to 15°C by Thursday or Friday. The weather office had earlier said that winter would arrive in the state by December 15, but the low pressure circulation over the Arabian Sea and a low pressure zone over Rajasthan was so far infusing the northern cold air with heavy moisture laden air thus preventing its inflow to the eastern parts of the country. This was further aggravated by the western disturbances.

Yesterday’s maximum temperature in Kolkata was 26.8°C and the minimum was at around 18°C. The sky has been overcast in parts and the minimum temperature today may be around 17°C.Temperature is likely to drop during the weekend.
