Bengal Assembly Speaker, Trinamool candidate Biman Banerjee COVID-19 positive, admitted to hospital
Election in the seat from where he is contesting, was held on April 6.
Biman Banerjee, West Bengal Legislative Assembly Speaker and Trinamool Congress candidate, has tested positive for COVID-19. He has been admitted to a hospital in Kolkata, off the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.
Banerjee is Trinamool Congress candidate from Baruipur West constituency. Election in his constituency was over on April 6. His condition was said to be stable.
Assembly election is currently on in the fourth phase in Bengal, where voting is scheduled in eight phases altogether. Election started on March 27 and will continue till April 29. Results will be out on May 2.
There has been a huge surge in COVID-19 cases across the country. With elections on in West Bengal, the situation has become all the more difficult as candidates are holding poll rallies which are being attended by thousands of people. The Election Commission has asked political parties to be careful about rallies and to take adequate measures to check the spread of Coronavirus.
