Trinamool Congress has started finalising its list of candidates for the coming civic polls in Bengal. The candidates contesting from Kolkata and Howrah are expected to be finalised before Doljatra, in early March. Elections are scheduled from the second week of April starting with Kolkata and Howrah municipal corporations.
Existing candidates will be given party tickets based on reports prepared by the team of political strategist Prashant Kishor. Stress will be given on their public relations, performances as well as their “lifestyle” – all of this is directly linked to their public image and the image of the party.
Kishor’s team will also keep an eye on complaints of nepotism, disproportionate accumulation of property and other such things which may negatively affect the candidates’ public profile and thus in turn impact the party’s image negatively. Local lawmakers are being consulted by Kishor’s team in deciding the candidature.
A committee of five has been formed by the Trinamool Congress which will decide on the candidates. The committee comprises of party leaders Subrata Bakshi, Partha Chatterjee, Firhad Hakim, Suvendu Adhikari and Abhishek Banerjee. The committee will take decisions in cases of conflict in selection of candidates in a particular ward when these cannot be resolved by the district committees. The final decision in every case will, however, be taken by party chief Mamata Banerjee.
