Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar: I will decide how I will work

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Tuesday that he would decide how he would work. His comment is being seen in the light of indications from the ruling party Trinamool Congress that he had been “pro-active” in last week’s incident at Jadavpur University where the Governor had gone to “rescue” central minister of state Babul Supriyo, who had been gheraoed by students.

The Governor refused to call his work “pro-active”, and said that it was “active”. The Governor attended two programmes in Siliguri on Tuesday — one, an administrative meeting and the other, a chamber of commerce meet.

Significantly too, the Governor said that he had gone to Jadavpur University “as a last measure to connect with the students”. He said that the students had responded by showing respect. The West Bengal Governor also added that he had spoken with chief minister Mamata Banerjee four times before he went to Jadavpur University, and had also spoken with the Vice Chancellor. However, he reiterated that he would not like to disclose his conversations with the chief minister.

“Universities must be left free so they can function themselves,” he said, adding that they should be seen neither as extension of a government department nor as extension of the Raj Bhawan.

Significantly too, no representative from the state government was present at an administrative meeting called in Siliguri. The Governor said that someone from the government “should have been there”.
