West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathy on Thursday met leaders of four leading political parties in the state and appealed to all of them to maintain peace. There have been incidents of violence and killings since the results of the Lok Sabha polls were announced. The Trinamool Congress and the BJP have both claimed to have been targetted by the other.
Tripathy had invited leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress and Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress at Raj Bhawan today.
After the meeting, CPIM’s Mohammed Salim said that everything in the state – including the junior doctors’ strike – was being given communal colour and this should stop. Congress’ Somen Mitra said that the party in power and the BJP were engaged on constant clashes and this should be put to an end by the initiatives of the leaders of both parties.
BJP leader Jayprakash Majumdar said that the very fact that the Governor had called the leading political parties and appealed for peace showed that there is no peace and safety in West Bengal.
Ruling party Trinamool Congress was represented by Partha Chatterjee.
