Bengal govt gives tabs & smartphones to 9 lakh students for online classes

Class XII students are getting the devices.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday inaugurated a programme to offer a smartphone or tablet to 9 lakh students in state-run schools for continuing their online studies. The students are in class XII and will appear for their Higher Secondary examination this year. Class XII students from madrasas will also get the devices.

The government has taken the decision to transfer Rs 10,000 to the bank accounts of the students as the state could not procure 9 lakh devices in such a short period of time. At the programme, Banerjee said that the money was being transferred from today, but if anyone is being left out, s/he should immediately inform the state education department about it.
