Bengal minister’s close aide Arpita Mukherjee held by ED after Rs 20 crore recovery

Minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested on Saturday morning.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday held Arpita Mukherjee, a close associate of West Bengal Commerce and Industries and Information minister Partha Chatterjee. The minister was arrested by the Central agency on Saturday morning and taken to its CGO complex office in Salt Lake, to be questioned further and produced in court later in the day.

The ED on Friday recovered Rs 20 crore in cash from the house Arpita Mukherjee after raiding her Tollygunge home. The agency released a statement which stated: “The said amount is suspected to be proceeds of crime of the said SSC scam.” The probe agency took the assistance of bank officials and counted the cash through machines. Notes of Rs 2000 and Rs 500 recovered during the raid could be seen in photographs. Also, about 20 mobile phones were recovered from Arpita Chatterjee’s house. Investigators are looking at the purpose for which these phones were used.
