Bengal municipal polls: all-party meeting called by state election body on Monday

The West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) has called a meeting of all the political parties in state on Monday to discuss the upcoming civic polls.

The meeting will be held at around 3 pm in the office of the State Election Commissioner Sourav Das. He will brief the party representatives on measures taken by SEC to conduct the polls in a smooth manner.
The state government is likely to suggest the dates of polls in Kolkata and Howrah to the Commission on Tuesday after which the Commission may notify the dates on Thursday. Polls in Kolkata and Howrah are likely on April 19. Polling in other municipalities is likely to be held in June.

The leaders of Opposition parties feel that such a tactic has been taken by Trinamool Congress so that they can assess their performances in these two places and plan their moves ahead of the polls in other municipalities. Trinamool Congress leaders however, deny this.

Political parties are likely to raise this and various other issues – especially the safety and security measures in the coming elections – among other things.
