BJP MP Soumitra Khan breaks down, will send divorce notice to Sujata for joining Trinamool

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Soumitra Khan — whose wife Sujata Mondal Khan joined the Trinamool Congress on Monday — addressed a press conference in Kolkata, where he said he is sending a divorce notice to his wife.

While speaking about his wife, Soumitra Khan broke down and blamed the Trinamool Congress for breaking his home. He said that he had loved her and been with her for over 10 years, wanted to give her a lot but she had still taken the decision that was breaking their home.

In 2019, Soumitra Khan had joined the BJP from Trinamool Congress and contested the Lok Sabha polls. However, he could not enter the constituency before the elections as per court order, and could not reach out to the electorate. Sujata had gone around the constituency seeking votes for Soumitra Khan, and he had won the seat eventually. Sujata’s move to join the Trinamool Congress is therefore major for both BJP and Trinamool Congress ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections.

Khan today said that her hard work had won him a few thousands of votes, “but people voted for me and the BJP. She is no one without me and my surname ‘Khan'”. Soumitra Khan also said, “she has to give up the surname ‘Khan’ and has to be only ‘Mondal’. I am snapping all ties with her”, adding he would send her divorce notice within 24 hours.

Soumitra Khan said that he cannot give up his political career and he had no idea she was planning to join the Trinamool Congress. “It is true I could not give her time for the past two months, but this is a bolt out of the blue,” he said. “I have been a good politician, but while my focus was elsewhere, someone stole the Laxmi from my home. It is my failure,” he said. “I am alone from now and a fighter for the BJP. The party has given me a lot,” Khan added.
