CBI seeks Speaker’s permission to charge three Trinamool MPs in Narada: reports

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought permission of the Lok Sabha Speaker to prosecute Trinamool Congress MPs Sougata Roy, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Prasun Banerjee in connection with the Narada sting operations of 2016.

According to an NDTV report, CBI sources have said that the agency has written to Speaker Om Birla requesting sanction to take action against the three MPs.

In the videos recorded by journalist Matthew Samuel, several individuals – including Mukul Roy and Sovon Chatterjee who are now with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – Firhad Hakim, IPS officer SMH Mirza and others, were seen purportedly discussing receiving cash from a journalist who posed as a person with business interests in Bengal. The videos were shown on Narada TV and have come to be known as the Narada scandal.

Meanwhile, the CBI has also summoned Sovon Chatterjee on Saturday and Aparupa Poddar in November in connection with the Narada investigation. Trinamool Congress senior leaders and state ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Subhendu Adhikary have also been called by the CBI for interrogation in the same case.

However, Mukul Roy won’t be named as an accused in the chargesheet though the probe would continue against him, the same report quoted CBI sources as saying.
