CBSE class 12 board exams postponed, class 10 exams cancelled
Decision announced after PM Modi meeting with top officials.
Class 12 board exams have been postponed and Class 10 exams have been cancelled due to a nation-wide surge of COVID cases, leading to huge worry among parents, students and various state governments demanding that the exams be scrapped.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, after a meeting held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with top officers. The CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) exams for Class 12, which were scheduled from May 4 to June 14, have been postponed, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank wrote on Twitter. A decision will be taken on the exam on June 1, he wrote, adding that students would get at least 15 days’ notice before the exams.
On the Class 10 exams, the minister said the results would be prepared “on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board” and any student not satisfied with her/his marks will be given the chance to take the exam when conditions allow.
PM Modi said in the meeting that “the well-being of students has to be the top priority for the government”, it was said a statement. He is also said to have mentioned at the meeting that the best interests of students would be kept in mind while ensuring their health is taken care of and not harming their academic interests either.
CBSE exams are held simultaneously throughout the country. Covid cases have been increasing in the second wave of infections in India, with 1,84,372 new coronavirus infections recorded this morning, the highest single-day rise so far, with 1,027 deaths.
