The state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken charge of the killings in Cooch Behar’s Sitalkuchi that took place on April 10 during the fourth phase of election. Four persons died as CISF personnel opened fire following an alleged clash as voting was under way. Earlier in the day, another person was shot dead outside a booth. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that the person worked for their party.
A special team was formed by the CID to probe into the incident. The team has asked for all the necessary documents from Mathabhanga police station. The officers will visit Sitalkuchi soon, it is learnt. The Calcutta High Court meanwhile, has asked for a report from the CID on May 5.
A public interest litigation was filed in the court on Monday. The appeal sought to bring out the circumstances in which the Central force personnel opened fire, among other things. The hearing for the PIL was held on Friday.
