Mumbai has reported its first death from the Delta Plus Covid variant. A 63-year-old woman died on July 27 after testing positive on July 21. According to reports, she had diabetes and other comorbidities. This is the second death in Maharashtra from the Delta Plus variant, after an 80-year-old woman from Ratnagiri died last month.
The Mumbai woman was fully vaccinated and among seven patients in the city who have contracted the Delta Plus variant, according to reports. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started contacting all seven patients after results reached its office from the state health department.
Two of the woman’s close contacts have also tested positive for the Delta Plus, it was reported. She was on oxygen support and was administered with steroids and Remdesivir. The Delta Plus is a mutation of the Delta, the highly contagious Covid variant.
On Wednesday, the Central government said the Delta Plus has been detected in 86 cases across the country but there is no “exponential surge” so far. The most were detected in Maharashtra, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Sujit Singh, the chief of the National Centre for Disease Control, told journalists.
