Bypolls were held on Sept 30.
Counting of votes has started for the byelection in three West Bengal Assembly seats – Bhawanipore, Samsergunj and Jangipur. West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is contesting from Bhawanipore. She must win to remain the state’s chief minister.
Counting started at 8 am today. The postal ballot results have been counted so far, and Mamata Banerjee is leading. There will be 21 rounds of counting of votes in the Bhawanipore constituency.
In the Assembly elections held in April-May 2021, Banerjee had lost to Bharatiya Janata Party’s Suvendu Adhikari by a close margin, a result she has contested and is fighting in court. According to the Constitution, she must win from a seat within six months of swearing in.
