COVID 19: Kolkata Metro likely to start services from Sept 8, only smart cards for now

Kolkata Metro Railway is likely to start services from September 8. Though the date has not been officially confirmed yet by Metro Railway authorities, it is learnt that services are expected to start from that day.
The Union Home Ministry, in its order of August 29, has stated that for Unlock 4, Metro rail will start from September 7 “in a graded manner, to be allowed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs/Ministry of Railways, in consultation with MHA”. Since there is complete lockdown in West Bengal on September 7, officials indicated that in Kolkata, Metro Railway is likely to start operations from the following day.
As in Delhi Metro, the Kolkata Metro Railway is also expected to start services with several restrictions which will soon be officially publicised. Tokens won’t be in use for sometime and only smart cards will be allowed. Recharge of smart cards can be done through mobile phone apps. All details would be available soon in the public domain, officials said. Services will also be restricted along with social distancing norms. Security personnel will keep a constant eye on strict implementation of these new restrictions, said officials.
