Cyclone Fani – that has turned into an “extreme severe” cyclone is likely to cause considerable damage to Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. As reported in the morning, Fani was approximately 450 km away from the Odisha coast. The wind speed, when it will hit the coast, may be approximately 200 km per hour. It is expected to hit the Odisha coast tomorrow afternoon.
Nineteen districts of Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh are likely to be affected, where a “yellow alert” warning has been issued. Heavy rainfall is also predicted in the surrounding areas. Over a hundred trains have been cancelled already. Fishermen have been asked to not venture into the sea, and tourists have been prevented from visiting the beaches in these areas. A number of people have already been evacuated, especially along the coast. Considerable destruction has been predicted, the reason state governments have been in coordination with the Centre for both precautionary measures and relief operations.
The sky remained cloudy throughout Thursday morning in Kolkata and surrounding districts. Heavy rainfall is predicted in the coming hours in south Bengal. The state government authorities have held meetings to take measures to fight the possible destruction caused by the cyclone. Kolkata Municipal Corporation authorities have also taken several measures to fight impending critical situations.
