Cyclone Yaas likely to be “very severe” storm, landfall on Wednesday

As intense as Cyclone Tauktae?

Cyclone Yaas is likely to intensify into severe cyclonic storm over the next 24 hours and will make a landfall on Wednesday on West Bengal and Odisha coasts. It will have wind speed of up to 180 km per hour during the landfall.

Yaas – expected to be almost as intense as Cyclone Tauktae that made a landfall along the western coast of the country last week – will intensify into very severe cyclonic storm. The cyclonic storm is currently moving at a speed of about 600 km of Port Blair, the IMD said today. The governments of Bengal and Odisha have issued alerts for Yaas that will bring wind speed likely to range from 155 to 165 km per hour.

In both states, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the military and the Coast Guard are gearing up. Some NDRF teams are also being used in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Evacuation process has been started in several areas.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will hold a meeting today with chief ministers of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to review the preparations.
