Didi jails people for saying “Jai Shree Ram”: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday attacked Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee saying she was arresting people for saying “Jai Shree Ram”. He was speaking at a public meeting in East Midnapore’s Tamluk, and was referring to a video of Mamata Banerjee that was circulating on social media on Sunday during her visit to the adjoining district, West Midnapore.
On Sunday, chief minister Mamata Banerjee was travelling through various parts of Jangalmahal where elections are scheduled for the sixth phase. While she was moving from one election rally to another, she stopped her vehicle on the way, and came out of it on hearing the words, “Jai Shree Ram”.
On seeing her coming out of the vehicle, those shouting “Jai Shree Ram” had fled the scene. Banerjee is seen in a video asking “Why are you running away?”
Her subsequent words are unclear in the video where the only phrase audible is “galagali dichche” (hurling abuses). Since the sentence is not fully audible it is difficult to conclude what she meant and whether or not she referred to the term “Jai Shree Ram” as an abuse.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) West Bengal posted the video from its official twitter handle, asking why Mamata Banerjee had called “Jai Shree Ram” as “galagali”.
The Trinamool Congress however said this was a wrong way to view the incident. “The way the men stood on the way along the road and shouted the slogans was intended to show disrespect towards the chief minister,” a Trinamool Congress insider said.
