3 Idiots Sequel Confirmed: Rajkumar Hirani Reveals Plot Details for Rancho and Friends

The Bengal Story Bureau: Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has officially confirmed that a sequel to his 2009 blockbuster movie 3 Idiots is in development. The director revealed that he is currently working on the script alongside co-writer Abhijat Joshi, offering a major update on how the lives of the iconic trio will look after nearly two decades.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Hirani stated that the upcoming film will move away from the college student environment that defined the original story. Instead, the sequel will follow the characters Rancho, Farhan, and Raju as they navigate the challenges of middle age.

Shifting Focus to Midlife Crisis

The upcoming film will track the lives of the central characters 15 to 20 years after their university days. According to Hirani, the three friends are now married, have children, and are dealing with a distinct midlife crisis.

The filmmaker emphasised that while the narrative has evolved, the movie will retain the signature situational humour and light-hearted treatment that made the original a massive success across India and global markets.

A Bigger Message and Script Status

The director stated that the narrative will carry a much larger social message than the first instalment, which targeted the pressures of the Indian education system. Hirani added that the script is currently being written and will take more time to be fully refined before entering production.

Actor Aamir Khan had also previously hinted at the possibility of a sequel in April, noting that the new narrative angle was fresh and entirely distinct from the original film.

Returning Cast and New Additions

The original 2009 film starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi in the lead roles, alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya. The original trio is expected to return for the second instalment to reprise their roles as Rancho, Farhan, and Raju.

Industry reports also suggest that Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal could be associated with the high-profile project, though official casting confirmations are yet to be announced by the production team.
