The Bengal Story Bureau: Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor reportedly stalled a film shoot in Delhi after refusing to step out of his vanity van due to the hazardous Air Quality Index (AQI) levels in the national capital. The actor expressed serious health concerns over the thick toxic smog blanketing the outdoor shooting location, forcing the production crew to pause operations.
Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) have been battling severe atmospheric pollution over the past few weeks, with the AQI consistently crossing the hazardous 400 and 500 thresholds in multiple sectors. Industry sources close to the development revealed that the film crew had set up a major outdoor sequence, but the severe environmental degradation led to an immediate health stand-off.
Health Concerns Over Rising Toxicity
According to crew members on set, Kapoor arrived at the location on schedule but became extremely uncomfortable after assessing the visible density of the smog. Doctors and environmental agencies have repeatedly issued warnings advising individuals to minimise heavy outdoor physical exertion during peak pollution periods, as breathing the ambient air under such conditions is equivalent to smoking multiple cigarettes a day.

With his respiratory safety in mind, the Kabir Singh star chose to remain inside the controlled, air-purified environment of his vanity van. He communicated his inability to perform outdoor scenes under such dangerous atmospheric conditions to the director and producers, emphasizing that the long-term health risks outweighed immediate production timelines.
Production Logistics Disrupted by Smog
The actor’s decision led to an unscheduled operational disruption, prompting the production team to call an emergency meeting on set. While directors prefer sticking to strict filming windows to avoid compounding financial overheads, the crew eventually acknowledged the validity of Kapoor’s safety concerns.
The production heads scrambled to restructure the shooting itinerary, shifting the focus to indoor sequences and tight close-up shots that could be executed within smaller, enclosed settings equipped with industrial-grade air purifiers. Film shoots in northern India have increasingly faced climate-related delays during the winter season, with low visibility and toxic air quality frequently invalidating seasonal shooting schedules.
