Weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday. He is expected to contest from one of the Delhi Lok Sabha seats. However, BJP leaders did not confirm this.
There were talks that the 37-year-old Gambhir might join politics, as his social media posts have commentaries on current political issues. He had won the Padma Shri award earlier this year. A resident of Delhi, Gambhir has played 147 one day internationals (ODIs) for India after his debut with the Indian national team in 2003. He had announced his retirement from cricket in December last year.
“I have been influenced by the PM and his vision for the country,” Gambhir said, adding that he considered this a wonderful platform to do something for the country.
