The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday ordered the release of former chief minister of the state, Farooq Abdullah. The National Conference leader had been detained seven months ago following the abrogation of Article 370 that granted special status to Kashmir.
Earlier this week, leaders of eight opposition parties had submitted a resolution to the Centre demanding the release of all political leaders in Kashmir. The opposition leaders said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government is trying to silence “democratic dissent” by “coercive administrative action”.
Farooq Abdullah’s son Omar Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, both former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, were also detained, apart from several others.
Shortly after his detention, Farooq Abdullah was charged with Public Safety Act (PSA), 1978 which allows the government to detain an individual for up to two years without trial. The move was criticised by opposition political parties.
