Supreme Court seeks Centre’s response on plea challenging Farooq Abdullah’s detention

The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre today seeking its response on a plea challenging the alleged detention of National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, who has been in his Srinagar home for six weeks since the special status of Jammu & Kashmir was scrapped.

The said plea was filed by Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko. Vaiko has said that he has filed the plea because Abdullah is due to attend a ceremony on the birth anniversary former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai in Chennai on September 15.

The apex court asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to get the Centre’s response whether or not Abdullah has been put on detention. Mehta opposed Vaiko’s plea saying he was not in position to make such a move in the matter. The next hearing has been fixed on September 30.

Politicians from Jammu & Kashmiri like Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti have been under reported detention since August 5, when the Centre scrapped the special status of J&K. Various restrictions on transport and communication have been imposed in the area, and some of these have been lifted from time to time.
