Renowned fashion designer Sharbari Dutta died on Thursday evening in her Kolkata home following a stroke, her family said. She was 62.
She has been a pioneer in designing men’s ethnic wear, and had blended beautifully the ethnic and modern together in men’s clothing. Decades ago, she was one of the few designers instrumental in changing the perception across the country that men’s choices in clothing was limited. She also designed clothes for women.
Dutta lived alone in her Broad Street home, and was not reachable on her phone since morning, it was reported. She was later found dead in the washroom. Though doctors felt that she had died after a stroke, her body was sent for post-mortem as it was found in the washroom.
Daughter of Bengali poet Ajit Dutta, Sharbari Dutta set up her brand Shunyaa.
