A fire broke out at Apeejay House – an eight storeyed building on Park Street that houses several offices – on Monday morning. The fire broke out in the eighth storeyed building during the rush hours of the morning when the area is crowded in and around busy Park Street.
All the people inside the building were safely evacuated by fire department officials. At least ten fire engines were sent to extinguish the blaze.
The building stands adjacent to Park Hotel. The first fire alarm rang at 11 am, and people started running out of the building. Officials suspect the origin of the fire to be from one of the server rooms on the fifth floor.
People were found sharing photos and posting videos on social media – in which black smoke and flames could be seen inside.
Kolkata Traffic Police restricted movement of vehicles around Park Street as a result of the fire, and the fire led to some congestion in the surrounding areas.
