Former Kolkata Mayor denies he is joining BJP

Former Mayor of Kolkata and Trinamool Congress leader Sovon Chatterjee has denied reports that he is joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Chatterjee said he was extremely hurt the way rumours are being spread.

“I received no offer from any political party to join till now. These reports are baseless and I don’t want to even react to them. But I am really hurt the way canards are being spread against me deliberately,” Chatterjee told reporters.

His friend, Baisakhi Banerjee said that she did receive a call from a BJP leader on March 2, but she was not interested in a ticket now.

In November, last year, Chatterjee resigned from the post of the Mayor of Kolkata and a minister in the state cabinet over certain issues and controversies. He has since not made public appearances and has stayed away from politics.

Chatterjee was once a favourite of chief minister Mamata Banerjee. But due to certain differences, the rift between him and the CM had perhaps gone beyond repair.

But speculations and curiosity began last week as reports claimed that Sovon Chatterjee and Baisakhi Banerjee might both join the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The speculations were further set into motion after they were threatened by thugs earlier this week.
