Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal today announced the implementation of free bus rides for women from today.
This will apply to state run buses and cluster bus services. Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi this morning saying that this was a gift from him to the sisters of Delhi on the occasion of bhai dooj. He tweeted: “Pink Ticket…Best wishes of bhai dooj to all the sisters of the Delhi family from this brother. Stay safe, make progress. The country will progress only if the women progress.” The CM also tweeted a picture of a woman holding a pink ticket.
Under this scheme, women will be given pink tickets. The transport providers will be reimbursed by the government based on the number of pink tickets issued.
The scheme had been was announced on Independence Day by the Delhi CM and was approved by the cabinet on August 29 with the proviso that women employees of the city have to give up their transport allowance facility to avail the free bus ride service. The facility will also be available in Noida-NCR, airport and other special bus services operated by Delhi Transport Corporation and cluster bus operators.
Additionally, the number of marshals for providing security to women in buses has been increased from 3,400 to nearly 13,000 from Tuesday. The CM said that the government was committed to protect women of Delhi and such a huge increase in number of bus marshals is unprecedented in the world.
