Heavy rainfall in Kolkata and several other districts of south Bengal affected normal life on Friday afternoon. One person died near Kolkata’s Victoria Memorial on being struck by lightning. Three persons died in Purulia from lightning bolts.
There was waterlogging in several parts of the city which prompted the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to open its special control room and use its pumps to drain out the accumulated water. There’s a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh, said weather experts, predicted heavy rainfall over the coming two days in south Bengal, including in Kolkata.
The lighting and heavy rainfall affected normal flights, which had to be suspended for approximately an hour from Kolkata’s NSC Bose International Airport.
Some trees got uprooted in several parts of the city, and along with this the waterlogging led to some traffic congestion.
