The Calcutta High Court today asked the West Bengal government to take off air all the ads that say that the state won’t implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The order by a division bench of Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Justice Radhakrishnan came after several petitions were filed against airing of these ads in the state amid protests. The next hearing is on January 9.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly said that the state won’t implement the NRC and the CAA. Nation-wide protests are being held against the NRC and the CAA.
Advocate General Kishore Dutta, on behalf of the Bengal government said that the ads had been taken off air now, but the petitioners alleged that the ads were still visible on the website of the West Bengal police.
While Union home minister Amit Shah has been saying that NRC will be implemented across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday claimed that his government had not done anything about the National Register of Citizens, and people who were protesting had been misguided by the Opposition’s lies.
