It will be ‘no’ to BJP, ‘yes’ to the others in 2019 even without projecting one leader as face of Opposition, says Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that people in the country would vote against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) even if one particular face wasn’t pitted against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

“It will be ‘no’ to the BJP and ‘yes’ to the others. The others will work as a family,” she said at an interactive session organised by a private television channel in Kolkata. “The Opposition leaders are not important, the country is important. Unity in diversity is important,” she said, answering a question.

“People will vote with the thought that ‘let BJP go first. There will be collective leadership. Many regional parties will understand that,” she said.

Banerjee added that two people were running the country currently and that citizens were afraid of the Prime Minister. She said this is uncalled for in a democracy.

The Bengal CM alleged that her trip to Chicago – where she was to attend a programme to mark the 125th year of Swami Vivekananda’s speech there – had been cancelled due to threats issued by some Hindu groups. She said Hindu fundamentalism had reared its ugly head in the country and people were being threatened. She did not elaborate on it, only hinted that some of her family members had also been receiving threats.
