Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren to address rallies in Bankura & Purulia for Mamata Banerjee
The move is significant politically.
With Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) star campaigners Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the party’s national president JP Nadda holding rallies and roadshows almost every day in Bengal, the Trinamool Congress campaign face remains its party chief Mamata Banerjee.
On Wednesday, the Trinamool Congress will get support from across the border with Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren joining her campaign.
Soren’s party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has decided to not field candidates in Bengal elections, and Hemant Soren has said that he would back Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress. Soren will address rallies in Purulia and Bankura on Wedneday and Thursday, which have a large percentage of tribal population.
The JMM has some influence among the Mahatos and Adivasis. It is being assumed that JMM’s decision to remain outside the polls in Bengal and to support Banerjee has to do with keeping the BJP out of power in the neighbouring state. The JMM heads the coalition government in Jharkhand in alliance with the Congress and the RJD. The Congress in Bengal has gone into an alliance with the Left parties in Bengal, but principally, there is no major clash between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress nationally. So there is not a major surprise or shock that the Jharkhand CM is backing the Trinamool Congress instead of the Congress in Bengal.
The move is significant politically, as it is part of the effort to bring together parties opposed to the BJP nationally, ahead of the next Lok Sabha polls.
