KMC polls: Trinamool gets 72% votes, huge increase from earlier polls in Kolkata

57.5 per cent votes in the Assembly polls, 50.6 per cent votes in last KMC elections

Trinamool Congress has won 134 wards out of the 144 seats of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), winning 72 per cent votes. The BJP won three wards and the CPI(M)-led Left Front and the Congress won two each. Independent candidates won three wards. The Left Front in this election has secured more votes than the BJP – the former got 11.7 per cent votes while the latter got 9.3 per cent votes.

The Left parties got second highest votes in 66 wards and in 48 wards, the BJP got second highest votes. The Congress emerged second in 16 wards in terms of vote share.

In the Assembly elections held earlier this year, the Trinamool Congress led in about 131 wards while 13 wards had BJP leading. Trinamool had 57.5 per cent votes in this area in the Assembly polls. This means that there has been an increase of approximately 15 per cent votes in favour of the Trinamool within a span of a few months. In the last KMC polls, the Trinamool – that had then formed the board of the civic body – had secured 50.6 per cent votes, which is therefore, an increase of over 20 per cent votes in the last five years.

The KMC elections were held on December 19 and results were out on December 21.
