Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar left Kolkata on Friday afternoon for Shillong, Meghalaya, for a meeting with officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that is to take place on Saturday.

Senior officials of the Kolkata Police said Kumar had left for Shillong a day ahead of the meeting.

Members of the CBI team too left for their Shillong office where the meeting will take place tomorrow. The meeting between Kumar and the CBI officials are taking place with the Supreme Court asking the Kolkata CP to cooperate with the investigation of the Saradha chit fund scam. The CBI has been alleging that Kumar has not been cooperating, while the senior IPS officer has maintained that he has offered all the requisite information to the central investigating agency.

Last Sunday, a team of 40 CBI officers reached the doorstep of the Kolkata CP’s official residence in Kolkata with the intention of interrogating him – apparently in a “secret operation”. The officers however were “held” by Kolkata Police, and chief minister Mamata Banerjee started a dharna to protest the high-handedness of the agency that was acting under the instructions of the Central government. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court said that Kumar could not be arrested, and asked the officer to cooperate with the CBI in the investigation. A “neutral place” – Shillong – was decided to be the venue for the meeting.
