Laxmi Ratan Shukla resigns as minister from Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet
He said he won't join any other political party.
Laxmi Ratan Shukla, minister of state for sports in West Bengal, resigned from the Mamata Banerjee cabinet on Tuesday. He has told the chief minister that he would like to discontinue with a career in politics, and focus on sports completely.
The former cricketer from Bengal, who has also played in the national cricket team, is an MLA from Howrah district. Shukla has clarified in his letter to the CM that he is not resigning in order to join any other political party, but simply because he wants to stay away from politics. He has also said that he will complete his term as MLA. Banerjee is learnt to have decided to accept the resignation. There were speculations for several months that Shukla may likely join the BJP, but in his letter to the CM, he has himself ruled that out.
However, there are speculations on what may have led to this sudden resignation as the current cabinet is expected to remain functioning for less than a month, with the announcement of the Assembly elections of 2021. “If he is not interested in continuing with his political career, he may have simply asked to not be selected as a candidate for the coming polls. The sudden resignation is surprising,” said a source. Shukla himself was not available for comments, but an official close to him said that he had explained his position clearly in the letter to the CM.
