It may rain for the better part of this week due to the combined effect of a Bay of Bengal depression and easterly winds, the Alipore weather office has said.

A depression has formed in the Andhra Pradesh coastline of Bay of Bengal which may develop into a low pressure zone in the next 48 hours. The low pressure zone will then attract north-east monsoon winds towards West Bengal. The effect will be further assisted by entry of moisture into the state riding on the easterly winds or easterlies. This will result in intermittent rainfall starting from Wednesday, which is likely to increase towards the weekend.

Intermittent rainfall with thunderstorm is predicted for Kolkata on Wednesday. Light rainfall is predicted for East and West Midnapur, Jhargram, North and South 24 Parganas as well.

Officials from weather office said that the cold winds from the north are being obstructed from entering state by the easterlies. The effect of easterlies is supposed to subside after the rains are over this weekend, which will lower the temperature all over south Bengal.
