Major reshuffle in Bengal BJP, but no top post for Sovon Chatterjee

The West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a major reshuffle on Monday, preparing grounds for the coming 2021 Assembly elections which the party is looking at as an opportunity to wrest power from the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Hooghly MP Locket Chatterjee was one of the big gainers – she was elevated to the position of general secretary of the party’s state unit.

However, former Kolkata mayor Sovon Chatterjee, who moved to the BJP from Trinamool Congress did not get any top position. Answering a question, state chief Dilip Ghosh “clarified” that Chatterjee “is still with the BJP”. Sovon Chatterjee has been in the news since he snapped ties with the Trinamool Congress, and not so long ago, visited chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence last year to seek her blessings on bhai phnota.

Also missing from BJP’s top positions was the party’s senior leader Chandra Bose, who has been vice-president in the state unit for years.

Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh, who defeated Trinamool heavyweight Dinesh Trivedi in the 2019 general elections, was named vice-president along with other leaders like Ritesh Tiwari, Jayprakash Majumdar and former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, while former Bidhannagar Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta was made a secretary of the party.

Celebrity designer Agnimitra Paul has been appointed as the leader of BJP’s women’s wing, the mahila morcha.

Apart from Locket Chatterjee, other leaders who will also hold the position of general secretary are Sayantan Basu, Jyotirmoy Mahato, Sanjay Singh and Rabindranath Basu. Bishnupur MP Soumitra Khan will lead the party’s youth wing (yuva morcha), Ali Hossain will lead the minority wing and Mahadev Sarkar will lead the farmers’ wing, (kisan morcha).
