West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday criticised the Central government for placing misleading reports in the Parliament on the issue of madrasas. She accused the Centre of using “political agenda” while placing information on madrasas of two districts (Burdwan and Murshidabad) in West Bengal being used for radicalisation and recruitment activities.
Banerjee today said in the state Assembly that the Centre had not used the report that Bengal government had sent, instead placed “a report of its own” in the Parliament.
She said that when specific questions are asked in the Parliament, the Centre asks for reports from the states concerned. “On June 28, we were asked whether the students from madrasas in the bordering districts were being radicalised. We gave a reply that such a question did not arise. But they (Centre) did not place our report (in the Parliament). Rather, they gave a reply of their own,” Banerjee today said in the state Assembly. On Friday, she placed the state’s report in the Assembly.
Banerjee said, “A thief is a thief, anti-socials are anti-socials. They should not be linked with any religion. If an incident takes place, the government will take action. It is not right to divide people on the basis of religion.”
The Bengal CM added that the BJP was politicising every matter. They were sending letters of Central government agencies to every department and threatening people, she said.
Union minister of state for home, G Kishan Reddy had said earlier this week that there were inputs regarding the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh using some madrasas in Burdwan and Murshidabad districts of Bengal for radicalisation and recruitment activities.
