Mamata Banerjee attends Governor’s tea meet: less friction in the days ahead?
Dhankhar has been less harsh towards Banerjee in his tweets in the recent past.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee attended the tea meet at Raj Bhawan on Republic Day hosted by Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. The meeting – not unusual in terms of courtesy — is however, being discussed in political circles going by the way Banerjee and Dhankhar have been engaged in friction for the past several months. In fact, the Governor has been less attacking on the CM for the past few weeks in his tweets, and this too has fuelled such discussions.
On Tuesday, Banerjee visited Raj Bhawan to attend the tea meet hosted by the Governor as per the norm every year on Independence Day and Republic Day. The CM is among the invitees along with other dignitaries. On Independence Day 2020, Banerjee had called on the Governor in the morning instead of attending the evening invite. It was said that Banerjee wanted to avoid the gathering during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Dhankhar had criticised the fact that the CM hadn’t attended the evening session. But on Republic Day (Tuesday), all seemed well with the Governor attending the programme organised by the Bengal government on Red Road in the morning — where he spoke with Banerjee for some time — and in the evening Banerjee called on Dhankhar at Raj Bhawan.
On January 6, the CM had called on the Governor at Raj Bhawan, and spoke with him for close to an hour. This was said to be a “courtesy call” for the new year. In recent past, Dhankhar has been less harsh in his tweets on Banerjee though, leading to intense speculations that the political dynamics may have changed somewhat through mutual understanding.
