West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee called several times and spoke with farmers protesting the Central government’s move of bringing in the new farm laws.
Banerjee sent Trinamool MP Derek O’Brien who met the protesting farmers on behalf of the party and expressed solidarity with the farmers who are protesting at the Haryana-Delhi border. O’Brien spent about four hours meeting various farmers’ groups who have parked their tractors and vehicles on the highway at the Singhu border.
During the day, Banerjee spoke over phone several times with the farmers. According to a party insider, “She made four telephone calls to different groups from Haryana and Punjab. The farmers shared their demand (for repeal of the new farm laws) with the Bengal CM and thanked her for her solidarity. They also expressed their gratitude for all her support to farmers and land movements in the past.” Banerjee told the farmers that she and the Trinamool Congress will stand by them in this movement, said a Trinamool Congress leader.
