Mamata Banerjee files nomination to contest from Nandigram
Nomination filed in Haldia sub-divisional office.
West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday filed her nomination from Nandigram for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
She was accompanied by her party’s general secretary Subrata Bakshi. She filed her nomination papers at the Haldia sub-divisional office after leading a two-km roadshow. Banerjee had reached Nandigram on Tuesday and will return to Kolkata on Thursday when she will release the party’s election manifesto.
The Trinamool Congress released its candidate list on March 5 and Banerjee announcing that she will contest from Nandigram. She had first “disclosed” this at a public meeting in Nandigram weeks back.
The Trinamool chief has so far contested elections from Bhawanipore constituency in Kolkata. This time, she is contesting from the Nandigram seat against her former aide Suvendu Adhikary who has now joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Adhikari, a former minister in the Trinamool Congress government, joined the BJP in December last year.
Bengal has Assembly elections scheduled in eight phases – starting on March 27 and continuing till April 29. Results will be out on May 2.
