Mamata Banerjee stops NPR work in Bengal

The West Bengal government on Monday decided to stay all work related to the preparation and update of the National Population Register (NPR) in the state. The decision, according to the order issued, was done “in the interest of public order”.

There are protests across the state over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register for Citizens (NRC). Mamata Banerjee herself led a massive rally in Kolkata – starting from Red Road and ending at Jorasanko. She announced that the NRC and CAA would be implemented in the state over her dead body. Towards the end of the day, the order stopping the NPR work was issued.

“No activity regarding NPR may be taken up without prior clearance from the government of West Bengal,” the home department order said. NPR is a register of residents that contain demographic and biometric details. The Centre has decided to prepare NPR between April and September 2020. The preparations and training of officials who will conduct this, is currently on. It was first prepared in 2010 and updated in 2015.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and other Left parties have been opposing the CAA, NPR and NRC, and took out a rally in Rajarhat New Town on Monday protesting the implementing of all three.
