Mamata Banerjee to return home today, treatment to continue at home

Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will return home on Friday evening. She was seriously injured on the foot and neck in Nandigram on March 10. Banerjee has alleged that she was pushed by four to five persons from behind, as she was meeting people through a narrow lane in her car, and the door of the vehicle slammed on her foot. Her party has moved the Election Commission alleging it was a “conspiracy” and not an accident.
Banerjee was rushed to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital where she was admitted since March 10 evening. Her foot had swelled up and was kept in a cast. On Friday, she expressed her wish to return home as soon as possible and the board of doctors formed for her treatment allowed her to be discharged. She is comfortable sitting on a wheelchair, the swelling on her foot has reduced and a new cast has been put on her leg, sources said.
The doctors have said that her treatment can continue in her Kalighat home. She is likely to return to the “field” soon as she had mentioned in a video message. She will set off on her poll campaigns on a wheelchair.
Bengal is heading towards a highly charged political battle for formation of the next government. Elections are scheduled in eight phases — starting from March 27 and continuing till April 29. Results will be out on May 2.
