Mamata Banerjee welcomes Supreme Court verdict, says it is moral victory

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed the Supreme Court verdict on Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar.

The Supreme Court today told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that Kumar cannot be arrested. The court however, asked Kumar to appear before CBI.

Kumar had earlier requested the CBI to decide on a “neutral” place – neither Kolkata nor Delhi – where the two sides could meet and “discuss” the investigation of the Saradha chit fund scam. He has written several times to the CBI on this issue. The apex court today accepted this, and it has been decided that such a meeting will take place in Shillong. The court has asked Kumar to appear before the CBI before February 20.

Speaking from her “Save Democracy” dharana stage in Kolkata’s Metro channel, Banerjee said it was a moral victory for her and the state. “This is what we wanted. We never said we would not cooperate with the investigation,” she said.

In response to a question, Banerjee said she would discuss with her party members about whether or not to continue with the dharna. “It is not about me alone, I will discuss it with my party members,” she said.

Told that the Opposition parties were alleging that she was using the dharna to gain sympathy and votes for the coming Lok Sabha elections despite being the head of a state, Banerjee said, “It is not true there are no precedents. Jayalalitha did. Others did it too. We are doing this to save the nation,” she said.
