West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him for Rs. 25,000 crore to the state government for fighting the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.
Banerjee wrote that the Centre still owes Rs. 36,000 crore to her government.
The CM mentioned that this grant to fight the Coronavirus situation is essential especially because the revenue earned by the state from various taxes has decreased largely due to the 21-day country-wide lockdown which started on March 24 midnight to check the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
Banerjee also wrote that her government has not decreased the salary of state government employees to meet the expenses of fighting COVID-19 in the state. Instead, her government is duly paying out the pensions under the state government’s various social welfare schemes even in such hard times, the letter said.
