New Year to bring rain in Bengal, Darjeeling may get snowfall on January 3 or 4

It may rain in the beginning of the New Year in south Bengal, although Kolkata is likely to be spared. Also, Darjeeling is expected to receive snowfall on January 3 or 4. The chill may return once the rains are over, weather officials said.

According to the officials, thunderstorms are likely to accompany the rain on January 2 and 3 across south Bengal, including Kolkata. The thunderstorms may also be accompanied by hailstorm.

Temperature will rise gradually from today due to an approaching western disturbance from Jammu and Kashmir. Cloud formation will result from the confluence of the easterlies blowing into Bengal with the westerly disturbance.

There will be light rainfall in west Burdwan, Birbhum and Purulia on January 1. However, the whole of the Gangetic West Bengal may receive rainfall on January 2. Parts of north Bengal are also likely to get rainfall on that day. But, the weather office has warned that under certain conditions, thunderstorms may occur on that day in Bankura, Birbhum, Purulia and both the East and West Burdwan. The districts in the western part of the state may experience thunderstorm on January 3, while it will continue to rain in the rest of the south Bengal on that day.

While the chill will start decreasing from today, night temperature will gradually reach 14°C and the day temperature will remain between 22-23°C. However, the wintry feel will continue. A slight drop in temperature will happen due to the rainfall that will bring the temperature down to 20°C.
