The Nirbhaya gangrape case in 2012 – that shocked the nation, leading to introduction of new laws – had been “blown out of proportion” by the media, senior Congress leader and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has said in an interview.
Dikshit, who was the Delhi CM between 1998 and 2013, is fighting the Lok Sabha polls from North East Delhi constituency. All the seven Delhi constituencies will go to the polls on May 12.
Dikshit was the CM when Nirbhaya was raped and assaulted by six men, including a minor, in a moving bus and she later succumbed to her injuries. The former Delhi CM has said in the interview that rapes happened always and at times got small coverage in newspapers, including those of minor children, but this gangrape case of the 23-year-old had been blown up into a political scandal.
Asked about security of women and installation of CCTV cameras, she said the Delhi government was actually under the Central government, which was responsible for the law and order situation and she hardly had any role to play in it. It may be recalled that Dikshit was also criticized for her comments on the rape case in the Delhi Assembly.
