No NRC in West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee in Siliguri

At a Bijaya Sammilani event at West Bengal’s Siliguri on Monday, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee assured once again that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not take place in the state. She said that no amount of pressure from the Centre could change the stand that she had taken on NRC.

The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that NRC will be implemented throughout the country. Banerjee reached Siliguri on Monday afternoon and will be in north Bengal for three days to review various administrative tasks.

She addressed people in the event saying that the Durga Puja in north Bengal are really eye catching and soulful and that she never forgets to watch north Bengal’s pujas on television.

She mentioned the cultural and linguistic diversity of north Bengal and reviewed the efforts of the Trinamool Congress government in giving cultural minorities like Rajbongshis, Kamtapuris and tribal languages like Kurukh and Gurumukhi the recognition they deserve.

The CM mentioned some ongoing developmental projects of north Bengal and said that these will completely transform the area in the coming years. Banerjee said that West Bengal is the only state in India which has been able to cut down unemployment rate by 40 per cent.
