Celebrating her 63rd birthday, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati called upon her party workers to grant her the birthday wish of electoral victory in Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming elections. Last Saturday, the leader had announced an alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP).
There are 80 Lok Sabha seats to contest in all in Uttar Pradesh. As per alliance, the party chiefs Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party and Mayawati of Bahujan Samaj Party have announced that they will contest 38 seats each. The remaining four seats will be left to the Congress and other smaller parties.
Urging her party workers to set aside their past differences, Mayawati noted that UP being the largest state decides the Prime Minister of the country. To see the ‘gathbandhan’ or alliance work would be her greatest birthday gift, she said.
The BSP chief pointed out that the BJP and other parties had been ‘robbed of sleep’ ever since the announcement of the alliance. Not sparing the Congress party, Mayawati critiqued the waiver of farmers’ loans in the three states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh where the Congress has recently won the state elections. She questioned the wisdom of setting the cut-off to nine months and the waiver amount to only upto Rs 2 lakh.
Clubbing Rafael and Bofors together, Mayawati urged for the need for a ‘proper mechanism’ to avoid such ‘fiascos’ in the future. The misuse of central agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation was another attack she mounted against the current government.
