PM Modi to address the nation at 5 PM today

The Centre's vaccination policy may be the subject he wants to address.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 5 PM today. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) tweeted the announcement earlier in the day.

There are indications that the PM is likely to speak on the Centre’s policy on vaccination. The matter was criticised recently by several states, some experts and was questioned by the Supreme Court in the face of a devastating second wave of COVID-19. Several states have been forced to announce lockdowns despite principally believing that lockdowns are hurting the country’s economy.

The apex court last week called the Centre’s policy of free vaccines for people who are 45 and above, and paid doses for the 18-44 group, “arbitrary and irrational”. The court has asked the Centre to review its vaccination policy and “place on record a roadmap of projected availability of vaccines till 31 December 2021”. PM Modi is expected to explain the government’s stand and policies under this backdrop.
